CAMPUS LIFE

How do I get involved on campus?

Start by attending campus events, organization fairs, and interest meetings; even if you don't know anyone yet. Try a few different things during first semester and don't feel like you have to commit immediately. Getting involved is one of the easiest ways to meet people and make your college experience more meaningful and fulfilling!

What's one campus event every CAU student should experience?

Homecoming is definitely at the top of the list. Beyond that, make time for organization events, in season games, and the plethora of campus traditions like Greek yard shows and Pantherfest! Some of the best college memories come from showing up to events you almost skipped.

How can I go about speaking out on personal or collective concerns?

If something is affecting your college experience, don't keep it to yourself. Start by reaching out to someone you trust, whether that's a professor, academic advisor, Resident Assistant (RA), counselor, or another campus staff member. There are people on campus whose job is to listen, support you, and help you find the right resources. A stance of power I also recommend is joining student leadership and working toward resolving these concerns and issues in your own progressive way.

What campus resources are often overlooked?

The Academic Success Center, Career Services, the Counseling center, and your professors' office hours are all resources students often wait too long to use. They all serve great purposes to streamline your experience so take advantage of them early on.

How do I make a name for myself at my HBCU?

Be consistent, be genuine and most importantly; BE YOURSELF! Whether it's in class, student organizations, volunteer work, or campus events, people notice students who contribute and support others. You don't have to know everyone; just focus on making a positive impact wherever you are.

One thing I wish I knew before first semester...

Don't compare your college journey to anyone else's. It takes time to find your people, adjust to college life, and figure out what works for you. Everyone's timeline looks different but it's most important how you plan to cultivate your own.

Any tips for getting out of your comfort zone on campus?

Challenge yourself to say yes to new opportunities. Introduce yourself to someone in your class, attend that event even if you're alone, or join an organization that interests you. You absolutely have to keep in mind that your time in college is limited and being surrounded by such a vast amount of opportunity should motivate you to live outside of what you're accustomed to. Once you do this, your experience will blossom right infront of you.
