Not necessarily. Many freshmen through their first year without one using rideshare services, campus shuttles, or catching rides with friends. Having a car can be very convenient, but it also comes with Atlanta parking, gas, insurance, and maintenance costs. If you're living on campus, you can still enjoy your college experience without bringing a vehicle, but it is certainly up to you!

Students usually use Uber or Lyft, MARTA, or carpool with friends who have vehicles. For example, the university offers shuttle services that transport students to and from the local grocery store. If you're making a larger grocery trip, consider shopping with a roommate or friend so you can split transportation costs and make toting everything back much easier. PRO TIP: Invest in a wagon!

Whenever possible, walk with friends, stay in well-lit areas, and avoid taking shortcuts through isolated places. Since we operate on an open campus, be aware of your surroundings and take advantage of the campus safety officers and resources if needed.

Before bringing your car, make sure that you are aware of the parking rules and fees included (usually $300 per semester) as well as designated parking areas. Think about whether you'll actually use your car often enough to justify the added costs. It's also a good idea to avoid leaving valuables visible inside your vehicle and to always keep your doors locked.
